Claude Cowork takes a task rather than a question: you describe the outcome, step away, and come back to finished work. For data people, that means a weekly numbers deck, a cleaned-up folder of exports or an analysis across three tools, done while you do something else.
The short answer: Cowork is on every paid Claude plan, on the web, on mobile and in the desktop app, but not on Free. It works on files you connect and on any connector enabled for your Claude account, including database connectors, and it can run tasks on a schedule. Anthropic is folding it into Claude itself: its product page now opens "Claude Cowork is now just Claude". Sessions can't be shared, only the artifacts they produce, and viewers need Claude accounts. For a result your whole team opens on live numbers, save it to a workspace such as Fastero.

Cowork uses "the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required". It plans, runs code in a sandbox, uses your connectors and checks back when it needs you. Anthropic points knowledge work to Cowork and software engineering to Claude Code.
The product has moved fast, so older guides are often wrong:
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| January 12, 2026 | Research preview on macOS, for Max |
| February 2026 | Plugins, Team and Enterprise controls, scheduled tasks |
| April 9, 2026 | Generally available on macOS and Windows, on all paid plans |
| July 7, 2026 | Web and mobile, starting with Max |
| September 16, 2026 | Starts merging with chat into one conversation |
| October 6, 2026 | New tasks on Pro, Max and Ultra run in the cloud |
If your account already has the merged version, there's one conversation that does both. Otherwise, look for the Chat and Cowork tabs in the message box.

Plans and where it runs
| Free | Pro, Max, Ultra | Team | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cowork | No | Yes | Yes, on both seat types | Yes, if an Owner enables it on web and mobile |
| Web and mobile | No | Yes | Yes, in beta | Yes, if enabled |
| Desktop app | No | macOS, Windows, Linux beta | Same | Same |
| Where new work runs | n/a | Anthropic's cloud | Cloud or a local virtual machine | Local by default; cloud if enabled |
You don't need the desktop app unless the task uses folders on your own computer, a browser or the screen. On individual plans, even a local folder works by copy: "When a task needs a file in the cloud, Claude fetches a copy of just that file." So your local files are processed on Anthropic's servers, and the app has to stay open for it.
What it can do with data
From Anthropic's own examples:
Every Monday, pull last week's web, ad, and channel numbers from Amplitude and BigQuery,
compare to the week before, flag anything that moved more than 10%, and put it in a deck.Connect to my analytics data and build a product metrics dashboard: DAU/WAU, weekly
retention, funnel conversion, and feature adoption. On files, Anthropic lists outlier detection, cross-tabulation, time-series analysis, charts and data transformation. Its optional data plugin adds commands such as /analyze, /write-query and /build-dashboard, the last of which produces interactive HTML. Check that plugin's connector list before you rely on it: at the time of writing, its Snowflake and Databricks entries read "Placeholder — MCP URL not yet configured".
How to connect a database to Cowork
Cowork has no database connection of its own. It uses connectors, and "Cowork loads the ones enabled for your claude.ai account, synced at session start". A connector you've added for chat comes along, and scheduled tasks can use it too.
- Open Customize → Connectors and choose Discover.
- Pick a connector for your data. Anthropic's listings cover warehouses and analytics tools. Fastero connects Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, BigQuery, spreadsheets and uploaded files through one connector.
- Click Connect to Claude and sign in.
- Start a task and name the source: "In Fastero, …".
Remote connectors connect from Anthropic's servers, not your computer. A database on your laptop or behind a VPN is out of reach unless it lets those connections in. Going through a workspace helps: you give Fastero the database credentials once, and Claude never sees them. "Connector authorization tokens never enter the sandbox" either. How to find a Postgres connection string covers the first step.
In Fastero, look at last week's orders. Find what changed most against the week before,
write it up in a short document, and add a chart of revenue per week to our Weekly numbers
dashboard. Use full weeks, and name the query behind each number.Scheduled reports
Cowork can run a task hourly, daily, weekly, on weekdays or by hand, and cloud tasks run "even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed". A task that needs local files only runs locally. Each run is its own session, and each uses your Claude allowance.
That's the right tool when the task needs judgment each time, like writing up what changed. Anthropic does advise against scheduling anything that sends messages on your behalf or is hard to undo. When the job is the same chart and the same numbers, a scheduled query is cheaper and always the same: in Fastero, dashboards refresh on a timetable and email themselves with a PDF, with no model in the loop. How to automate reports with Claude walks through both.

Connect Claude →Approvals on a Team plan
On Team and Enterprise, an organization setting decides how much Cowork asks. Allow "Always allow" for connector tools is off by default, so members approve write tools for each task, and earlier "always allow" choices for write tools aren't honored.
Read tools skip this only when the connector labels them, and Anthropic warns that "Most custom connectors don't annotate their tools, so every tool on those connectors is gated." Every Fastero tool carries a read-only or destructive label, which is what this check reads. On a long task, that's the difference between finishing and waiting for you.
What happens to your data
- Training: on Team and Enterprise, Cowork data "isn't used to train Claude". On Pro, Max and Ultra, it follows your Help improve our AI models setting.
- Deleting: a deleted task leaves Anthropic's back-end systems within 30 days.
- Local sessions on Team: "This data is not subject to Anthropic's standard data retention policies, and admins cannot centrally manage or delete it."
- Compliance: Cowork sessions are captured in the Compliance API, which is Enterprise only. Anthropic says OpenTelemetry logging "doesn't replace audit logging". The HIPAA agreement covers Cowork only in desktop local mode with a specific configuration.
- Prompt injection: Anthropic says "the risk of prompt injection attacks is non-zero" and "You remain responsible for all actions taken by Claude performed on your behalf."
For database work, give the connector a read-only login. Then a task that goes wrong can't change your data, whatever it's been talked into. Fastero's own SQL tool also refuses anything that writes.
Usage limits
"Claude Cowork consumes limits faster than Chat", and Anthropic gives no figure. It shares one allowance with chat and Claude Code, so a long Monday task can leave less for the rest of the week. Anthropic suggests grouping related work and starting a new conversation for anything unrelated.
To reduce what a task uses, point it at a saved query rather than asking it to explore the data again each time.
Sharing the result
"Sessions can't be shared with others, but you can share individual artifacts you create during a session." Those artifacts follow Claude's normal rules: "Everyone needs a Claude account", and an artifact on connected apps uses each viewer's own connections, so two people can see different data. It can't be opened through "Anyone with the link" at all. How to share Claude artifacts covers every route.
If the people who need the answer don't use Claude, have Cowork save its work to Fastero instead. The dashboard lives in a workspace on live numbers. Colleagues open it with their own login and role, viewers are free, and it stays correct when the session is long gone.

FAQ
Is Claude Cowork free?
No. "Cowork is available to paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise) only." On a Free account, the Cowork tab opens an upgrade offer.
Can Claude Cowork connect to my database?
Yes, through a connector enabled for your Claude account: from the directory, or a custom one by its address. Claude connects from Anthropic's servers, so the database or the service in front of it must be reachable from the internet.
Do I need the desktop app for Cowork?
Only for folders on your own computer, browser use and computer use. On the web and on mobile, Cowork runs on Anthropic's servers. The app runs on macOS and Windows, with Linux in beta.
Why does Cowork use up my limits so quickly?
Each step of a task uses tokens, and a task takes many steps. Group related work, start fresh for unrelated work, and point it at saved queries rather than having it explore.
What's the difference between Cowork and Claude Code?
They share an architecture. Anthropic aims Cowork at knowledge work with no terminal, and Claude Code at software engineering. Both use the same connectors and draw on the same allowance.
What happened to Claude Cowork?
It's merging with chat into one conversation, rolling out across Pro, Max and Ultra, in beta on Team, and on Enterprise where an Owner enables it. Your tasks, projects, connectors and files carry over, and "you can't switch back".
